Out of the Closet - Seattle

My wife liked a piece of jewelry in the case and we asked the employee twice if it was in decent condition. She stated it was and they don’t sell anything that is substandard or broken. So we paid 55$ dollars for it. We like to support this store because we hear that they do good things for the community. However we won’t be anymore. The item immediately fell apart at home when we tried to put it on her. I mean it was truly broken and they didn’t care. It’s one thing if we donate but if we’re purchasing something please don’t sell us things that are in awful condition. Even goodwill will take something back if it’s obviously broken. Not this business. They told us too bad. Must be nice.

Good prices, greater cause, awesome selection, really feels like a staple in the community to have this here. always happy to stop in and am wowed by the number of ways to get involved! i did try to donate a couch and was informed upon arrival that the couch was too big for their floor and wouldnt sell. it was a bummer but i was already aware that this would be a possibility from the info shared on the donation pickup form, so no harm done. plus, it was a free service so i was thankful for the time given to come check out the couch anyway

This is a solid little thrift store in Capitol Hill that supports a good cause. Often there are many deals here and good prices for donated items. I have found some treasures for sure. They even have a frequent buyer point program. Massive book selection, and often womens footwear in larger sizes. Dont forget their rotating sale rack and community shelf with resources and fliers.Edit: I did forget to mention there is a bag checking system here. Im not a fan of it but it seems that they require almost everyone to check their bags if its larger than a fanny pack. I havent seen any discriminatory practices on who needs to check bags, but sometimes staff are busy and are not able to keep an eye on everyone walking through the door. So, people inevitably get through without checking their bags and I can see how that would be frustrating if yours were checked and others not. My recommendation would be for the store to have more employees on the floor to ensure all bags are checked or put a sign on the door in forming customers that their bag will be checked or that they need to go to the register to have their bag checked. Or just do away with checking bags all together as it is a newer practice within the last couple years and I dont know how it has affected their theft rate.I also have not donated anything to them and cannot speak on that process. I scheduled a pickup only to be told there was no room at the store for my sofa and I waited all morning only to find that out when the drivers arrived. It would have saved me a lot of time and disappointment if they would have told me when he called to say they were on the way or before instead of showing up as they obviously knew in advance. Now Im scrambling to find another solution. Oh well, I guess Ill pay a for profit business to remove my furniture instead of giving your organization a donation for time and effort.

Very disappointed in this thrift store due to their discriminatory policies. They require all bags and backpacks to be checked and kept behind the counter. Of course, there is no one responsible or actively watching belongings.Every time I buy something with a card, they need to see an ID. Student ID was not acceptable, and I didnt have my drivers license on me, since I took the bus. They refused to sell me anything.They discriminate against individuals who may not have a government ID or are trans and ID doesnt match the card. They discriminate against people who may have valuables or medical equipment in their backpacks or bags.I sincerely support the cause and love sustainable shopping, but this is too much. I understand preventing theft, but these policies deter many paying customers away.Really disappointed since I used to enjoy shopping here. Now, I just get treated like a criminal.

I bought clothes here yesterday. I got a good deal!!I can’t speak English, so I apologize for not understanding what the clerk was saying at the register! From other google map reviews, they may have been asked to show ID.(Im using a translator, so the sentences may not be correct)

I made a reservation for them to pick up a used couch & loveseat, which they say they accept. I uploaded photos of both pieces prior, and they accepted the request for pickup. Scheduled out a week later. They said they would contact us the day before to remind us and give us a time frame of the pick up.I should have known all wasnt well when they didnt call the day prior. I called the 800 number, they said the pick up was scheduled from 1:50 - 2:50pm. But if the drivers deemed them not worthy they wouldnt take them. I wasnt worried - they saw the photos, and the pieces are in reasonably good shape - no tears or stains, just older.Anyway, the next day, they called at 10am to say theyd be at our house at 11-12am. I asked if they could come at 11:30, they said no as we were the first pick up of the day. They then said their truck was full, and they might not be able to take both. I was confused, as we had this reservation for a week, and he just told me we were the first of the day. All the person on the phone could say was good questions, I have no answer when I asked.So, they showed up at 11:30, said they had no room and left. In the meantime, I am getting my new furniture delivered tomorrow. Then they tried to bully me by saying I know we are the only ones who offer this service in the area. All I can say is this company is trash and my donations will go to Habitat stores, which ALSO PICK UP FREE. I should have gone with them, but thought this was a more worthy charity. I wont be shy letting others know to steer away for Out of the Closet at all costs.

The store presents itself as an inclusive place but they were playing music with lyrics that were all about body shaming

Nice little thrift shop with clothing books furniture. We came from Alaska, my Son had brain surgery. It was nice to find clothes since we came with none. They carry dishes as well, which is nice.

If its hard to find stuff its because the prices are good and someone else got it.The furniture pickup service was communicative and careful of my buildings walls. They wont carry big stuff down stairs but they helped me with the elevator. Easy to use

Definitely disappointed. I know I came in with my own presumptions about access to changing rooms. FYI there are none. Since I had limited time I decided to just buy three, try them on at home and return them. Turns out their policy is exchange only which I wasn’t aware of. The employee was incredibly salty about my misunderstanding which was off putting. I was new to the store and even if I wasn’t, not everyone is aware of the policies and they’re frustrating to navigate. On top of this rude customer service attitude, the pants selection is terrible. Lots of items are mislabeled on sizing and when you go to double check, you find they’re not even in the correct section. There’s literally cisgender women pants in the cisgender male pants section. As someone who is newly transgender, it’s important to me to have options. Yes gender is a construct but don’t put items in one section that you’ve clearly labeled are supposed to be in another section of the store. I’m not thrifting to be bougie I’m trying to save money for a new job that started. Well I couldn’t find enough good pants and guess what?? Exchanges are only good for the day of so not only was I spoken to like I was somehow an idiot for not knowing the store policies, I was swindled out of my money because I couldn’t find any pants exchanges. I did find one pair but I have been extremely put off by the smell. I’ve washed them twice now and they still smell terrible. Definitely not going back to this store.

Great purchases but and employee told us we could return within 48 hours and I returned within 24 hours and the store told me that wasn’t true. Need to train your employees better.

I guess it was okay overall, but it was disappointing. If a queer thrift store is going to gender segregate clothing, they could at least label them as feminine/masculine rather than womens/mens. Their music was loud enough that I cant say its accessible for sensory processing disorder folks. They were dog-friendly, which is nice, until they end up distracting a service dog. Book selection was good and book prices were excellent.

The one-stop shop, for your prescription medications, & the cool second hand stuff we ALLL need & ♡LOVE. PARKING IS TOUGH, but possible. BROADWAY party spot is neighbors, so hoot n hollar all the way there. I do.;-)

Regarding donation pick up only. I had two nice living room pieces that cost me a few thousand and were hardly used. But it’s Seattle and it’s hard to sell larger pieces since most people do not have the means to transport them. Thought I would donate them instead and this org was convenient. I’ll list the PRO/CONs regarding my interaction.PROs: Easy to set up pick up, communicative and on time. Had workers who could potentially move furniture.CONs: Everything was going fine with the donation process until there was some difficulty. Being Seattle, it can be challenging to move furniture in an apartment situation. Given that, I had my father drive an hour out of his way (on a work day) to come up and help these guys move the pieces. The workers who showed up were friendly enough but not who I would expect to move hundreds of pounds of furniture. Needless to say, that without our help, there is no way they could have moved them.Anyways, since I consider this a mutual transaction we offered our help, but honestly it felt like we did most of the work. My dad has considerable medical conditions (but manages well and is active) and I was recovering from surgery. We didn’t mind helping them the best we could, but towards the end when we were moving the last piece of furniture one of the frustrated workers (who was having issues managing the piece) snapped at my dad who was just trying to help.I work in healthcare and have to hold my tongue often in addition to having to have quite a bit of resiliency when things don’t go right. To me this interaction seemed inappropriate and unprofessional. I was going to say something, however it’s didn’t seem worth it at the time.Improvements: I get it’s a non profit but have workers who are up to the task of moving medium to large pieces in a city setting. Maybe teaching some resiliency and professionalism when interacting with people who are just trying to donate quality pieces for a cause.What stared out as a great experience ending up leaving a bad taste in my mouth.

One of my favorite thrift stores in Seattle — actually low prices, goes to a good cause. But their new policies suck.The ID requirement for cards — not Apple Pay, curiously — is not something I can support. This is not accessible to trans people whose card info may not match their ID. This is not accessible to poor people who may not be able to afford ID but still have a debit/credit card.

One of my go-to thrift stores, Ive come here a lot especially earlier in my transition when I was more insecure about going out shopping for affirming clothing. Prices are good and within thrifting ranges, you can easily find items for under $10, unlike larger stores like Goodwill. Decent variety too, great for finding new styles.

Reasonable prices, good selection, easygoing & kind staff, and over 90% of each dollar is donated to HIV care/research. I’ve bought so many of my favorite finds from here!

There are some amazing things to be found here! It is hit or miss, but when you do find something it is an amazing deal. Way cheaper than any other thrift store like goodwill and lifelong thrift. They also have a $1 rack which is great if you find something and also great if youre looking for some fabric for a project.

The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. They have really great deals and attractive, stylish clothing, shoes, accesories and home wares. They also have furniture and books. Clothes donations can be made here. Some profits go to a community clinic for LGBTQA at risk persons. Its a community supportive space. Ive always felt welcomed and aporeciated here.

Great little thrift store supporting a big cause in the heart of capitol hill. Since Ive started working from home, I have found myself walking through here on breaks and have found plenty of fun knick knacks to needed items (such as cutlery, 3 butter knives for less than a dollar!).

Best thrift store in the city, really glad they exist! I just spent $8 and am the proud new owner of a stylish dress, shirt and 2 paintings; 1 canvas, 1 print--- SO GOOD!!

Lovely thriftshop and more. Sometimes i want the couches or dresser sets. Alas, i had room to purchase 12 items of cutlery resembling polished silver metal bamboo forks, knives and spoon for a few shillings and a few ha pennies. I wish I could try everthing on and run around an dance with the jamming Out of the Closet thrift store faeries.

I have found some amazing things here. All Saints blouse and sweater, Authentic Yves Saint Laurent scarf, Free People, J Crew, the list goes on! Very sweet staff too.

I go here for all my thrift store needs. Ive gotten a water jug and some silverware. Theyve got a decent selection of clothes too.

Great selection of vintage clothing, bric-a-brac and more, with fairly decent prices. All profits go to the AIDS Health Foundation. Support a good cause while you shop: win-win.

They picked up two couches I donated and it was quick and easy! I feel good about donating here because of the high proportion of profits going to the AIDS healthcare foundation (96 cents on the dollar)

Its a great thrift store that has used furniture as well as clothing and other things most of it reasonably priced. I found some nice pieces of furniture there.

You can get tested for STI here.The prices are a bit higher than other thrift shops, but the environment is welcoming in that Seattle-LGBTQIA way that everyone needs when theyre making life changes.

The staff are nice and the items themselves are priced reasonably most of the time. I found a lot of cool stuff and will come back if I have the chance.

Prices are fair, the money goes to help people with hiv. Most of the time the cashiers are nice , helpful. Never crowded.

I love that they have free HIV testing inside but some of the clothing items are overpriced. I saw T-Shirts that were given out for free (like for volunteering or going to a summer camp) that they were selling for $5.

Worst company and customer service ever! I have never had any company (donation or otherwise), cancel twice on the same day of pick up. Do not use this donation company, this does not show at all that they care about helping others in need!

Really not much interesting in this thrift and whats more the prices are quite high. Weird atmosphere. Well kept and tidy apart from that but hey that doesnt save the whole thing.I would rather advise against this place. Prefer suburban thrifts or small towns, you wont do business in city centers unless theres a miracle!
